Columbus Landmarks and the Friends of Green Lawn Cemetery together host quarterly, seasonal walking tours that focus on the history and natural beauty of Central Ohio’s preeminent 19th century cemetery with interpretive help from a naturalist and a historian.

Please join us Sunday, January 29 from 2-4 p.m. for a Green Lawn Walk for Restoration. This guided tour will have an added special purpose focused on the needs of the cemetery in the wake of recent, devastating vandalism. It is estimated that over 600 markers and monuments have been damaged with repair estimates exceeding $1 million. Columbus Landmarks will donate all tour proceeds to the Friends of Green Lawn Cemetery for restoration and repair of some of these fallen monuments.

Tour tickets are $10 for members of Columbus Landmarks and Friends of Green Lawn Cemetery and $15 for non-members. Donations are welcome and will also be dedicated to the restoration efforts at Green Lawn.

The Friends of Green Lawn Cemetery organization has always contributed generously to the repair and maintenance needs of this treasure of history, architecture, monuments, diverse old growth trees, and wildlife. Green Lawn is the cultural textbook of the community, telling us as much about what we have valued in the past, as well as pointing toward what we will honor and preserve for the future.

The vandalism in Green Lawn may have ripped pages from this textbook, but it has also awakened the entire community to its significance, prompting the involvement of Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, media coverage, and an outcry from concerned citizens. Please join us to experience this still beautiful place, to witness the damage, to learn what has been done and is planned to increase security, and to gain an understanding of what is involved in restoring a century-old shattered tablet or toppled obelisk.

Bundle up and join us! Tour begins at the Huntington Chapel located in the center of the cemetery. Save the date for upcoming 2017 Seasonal Walks at Green Lawn Cemetery on April 30 (spring), July 30 (summer), and October 29 (autumn).
