>7.26.16 UPDATE – construction fencing has been erected around the buildings to be demolished.

A proposed development impacts 1892-1928 North High street, filling the entire block of High between 16th & 17th avenues. Eight buildings will be demolished to make room for the six-story, 170-unit mixed use building proposed by Edwards Communities.

Included in the demolition area is the 1928 Wellington Hall, located at 1892-1900 N. High Street, and the adjacent Sigma Nu House, located at 22 E. 16th Ave. The Wellington was designed for comfortable “bachelor apartments” with “modern and attractive storerooms” (retail space) and provided hotel service in the apartments complemented by other amenities including a cigar shop, barber shop and restaurant (The Fallonel). Most recently, the building housed apartments and retail businesses, all recently closed including Bernie’s Bagels and Deli.  Sigma Nu was designed by Architect Ray Sims in a northern Italian style with wrought iron grill work on the windows and balcony, brick trimmed with stone, and completely fireproof. Sigma Nu officially opened in April, 1929. The building has been vacant for many years.
