Green Lawn Cemetery is our city’s most unspoiled resource of diverse, historic architecture. Examples of Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque, Egyptian Revival, Neoclassical, and late 19th and early 20th century forms stretching from Victorian to Art Deco await you on a guided Winter Walk that will focus on the mausoleums in this special park. There are 33 free-standing mausoleums in Green Lawn and numerous other notable structures.

American mausoleums and free standing tombs were a legacy of political and religious upset in 16th century Britain during the English Reformation when the wealthy could no longer bury within walls and floors of churches, and resorted to suitable and privately financed structures. Families in Britain and America often employed the architect who designed their home to design their final family resting place.

The Victorian Cemetery is often seen as a metaphor for a philosophical change regarding death–it was not to be feared but embraced as natural and beautiful. Life is apparent at Green Lawn in winter when birds, fox, deer and other wildlife embody the metaphor. Green Lawn trustee and naturalist, Randy Rogers, and Doreen Uhas Sauer, historian and education coordinator for Columbus Landmarks, will greet you in the Huntington Chapel, located near the center of the cemetery. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Your ticket purchase supports restoration efforts at Green Lawn and the work of Columbus Landmarks, advocating for historic preservation and new design excellence. We thank you!

When I initially left a comment I appear to have clicked the -Notify me
when new comments are added- checkbox and
from now on each time a comment is added I receive 4 emails with the
exact same comment. Is there an easy method you are able to remove me from that
    service? Kudos!
