Home Preservation: Update On Low-Interest Loan Program | Columbus Landmarks

Iuka Ravine 29Last year, Columbus Landmarks began work on a new program to assist Columbus homeowners in the repair and rehabilitation of houses that are at least 50 years old. The program will provide homeowners with low-interest loans for the purpose of making needed improvements to these historic residences. It is an exciting extension of the mission of Columbus Landmarks, to “promote and preserve Columbus landmarks and neighborhoods.” Initially, the goal of the program was to have the several renovation projects already underway. Unfortunately, Columbus Landmarks was not able to begin the program roll-out in 2014 as anticipated. There are still details that have yet to be resolved with the participating governing agencies. Moreover, additional funding must be secured before beginning the process of accepting applications and reviewing potential renovation projects.

On a positive note, there has been much support from both Columbus City Council and Huntington Bank, and interest from other financial institutions, as well. Columbus Landmarks staff and trustees have worked diligently to create the scope and details of the program, application requirements and forms, and even specification guidelines for a variety of renovation projects. There has been research and helpful information gathered from other municipalities that have similar successful programs. And there has been investigation into several target neighborhoods that could provide the initial project sites.

As in many other cities across the country, Columbus has spent a significant amount of time and money to demolish neglected and unsafe buildings. Yet many of these buildings have value and are important to the historic fabric of their particular neighborhoods. They should not be lost. The Home Preservation Program seeks to be one very practical approach that can help stabilize neighborhoods while preserving our city’s architectural heritage. Columbus Landmarks will continue to work to help make this program a reality and permanent operation in our city.
