The “King of Buildings” and 47-story Art Deco icon was designed by master architect C. Howard Crane and opened in 1927. Headquarters of the American Insurance Union and named The Citadel, this impressive monument was acquired by the LeVeque family in 1945 and sold in 2011 to a group of local investors committed to its renaissance. At 555 1/2 feet tall (6 inches taller than the Washington Monument), it was once the fifth tallest building in the world and served as an aerial lighthouse for Amelia Earhart.

In 2017, the National Register-listed building will be reborn as a mixed use urban center, containing a 150- room Marriott Autograph Hotel, 74 new apartments and condominiums, renovated and upgraded office floors and public spaces, a full service restaurant and pub, and a popular coffee shop. The unique “Oak Bark” terra cotta skin of the tower will be restored. The project is supported by state and federal historic preservation tax credits and city incentives.
